Mother Guilty Of Infanticide

A 40-year-old single mother from Navua who was charged with murder has been found guilty for a lesser count of infanticide by the High Court in Suva.

Tavenisa Raceva appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo yesterday.

On March 9, 2017, in Navua, Raceva had suffocated her seven days old baby boy.

Raceva was initially charged for one count of murder of her newborn baby.

Justice Temo overturned the assessors’ verdict and convicted Raceva for one count of infanticide.

While delivering the judgement, Justice Temo said that Raceva had admitted to suffocating her baby and when she committed the offence, her balance of mind was not correct.

Justice Temo has adjourned the matter for sentencing today.
