The potential to cure cancer and the potential to reduce the cost burden of the society from cancer depends on education.

This was the statement made by the MIOT International, India Managing Director Dr Prithvi Mohandas during the MIOT International Cancer Conclave, Continuing Medical Education Programme in the ‘Win Against Cancer’ at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi yesterday.

He said in the last two years, MIOT had received more than 100 cancer patients from Fiji alone.

“We treat patients from more than 123 countries. In the last two years we have received over 100 cancer patients from Fiji alone and we’re able to understand a little bit about the sort of disease you have and the sort of conditions that exist in the Pacific,” he said.

Why interest in Fiji

“India is a very large and diverse country,” Dr Mohandas said.

“It may be interesting that a country that is almost 20 hours away is taking so much interest in the Pacific.”

He said after visiting Fiji, he found that the Pacific Islands were strategically and perfectly poised to take off in the same way that India took off around 30 years ago.

“Your particular place is far superior because if you are able to collaborate and share knowledge with a country like India you will probably reach where India has far quicker by committing far less of the mistakes that we did in the last three decades,” he added.
