The most important thing on the ramp is talent and confidence says Fijian Fashion Festival model Shayal Swastika Kumar.

The 19-year-old from Nadi is a Law student at the University of the South Pacific and will be walking the runway for the first time this June.

Speaking on the diversity in the model lineup for this year’s show, Ms Kumar said she was happy to see that models were selected on talent.

“Everyone who has had a dream of becoming a model should be given a fair chance and it is great that models of all sizes, colours and gender were included,” she said.

“This shows that we have embraces equality.”

While the rehearsals are challenging, Ms Kumar said the effort was well worth it.

“Ever since I learned about fashion, I have been fascinated by it,” she said.

“From a young age, modelling became a dream of sorts.

“Rehearsals are challenging at times, but through every rehearsal I am learning new things, becoming more confident and at the same time getting better with my walk.”
