The Radike Buresova cap­tained- Ba Provincial Free­bird Institute became the first team to qualify for the Voda­fone National Secondary Schools Rugby League Under-19 semi-final to be staged at the ANZ Stadium, Suva next Saturday.

This is after the side put a gallant performance in the second spell to edge out John Wesley College 12-8 in the quarterfinal at Garvey Park in Tavua yesterday.

Ba Pro took a 4-0 lead from two penalties that were converted by Joseva Vunisa.

John Wesley College replied with a try to prop Eparama Tuivu­niqoro to level the scores at 4-4.

A try to Navitalai Bakalevu and converted by Vunisa extended Ba Pro’s lead to 10-4.

Halfback Tomasi Savou scored another try for John Wesley to narrow the deficit 10-8 before Vunisa kicked a late penalty to seal the win.

It was emotional moment for John Wesley College players as they also farewelled Tuivuniqoro as he leaves for Japan today for a four-year rugby contract.

Buresova told SUNsports that it was a tough match but they man­aged to pull through.

“For the semi-final we need to talk a lot more on the field and to tighten up our defence,” he said.

In the other U19 quarters, Ratu Navula College upset defend­ing champions Ratu Kadavulevu School 8– 6.

Hosts Tavua District lost 14–24 to Queen Victoria School while Nas­inu Panthers proved too strong for Ba Methodist High School with a 32-6 thrashing.

Under 17: AD Patel 4–20 QVS, Ba Pro 6–16 Marist Brothers, Ra High 10-26 RSMS, Drasa 0–30 Nasinu Panthers.

Under 15: Nasinu Panthers 6– 4 Ba Methodist, AD Patel 14– 30 QVS, Ba Pro 24 – 14 Sila Central, RKS Eels 12–8 Natabua High.
