The activities for the Seaweed Project in Nabuna, Koro, has been boosted.

This is after they were handed a 25-foot fibreglass boat and engine from the Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau.

The handing over which was done in Nacamaki Village, Koro on Friday was a blessing to the villagers because it will enable them to further their seaweed project.

Tevita Bolabola, 64, said it was a long time coming.

“We used to either swim to the sea- weed farm or use small tin boats. It was really hard for us but we still tried our best to grow our farm. Now it is certainly a dream come true,” Mr Bolabola said.

“We are thankful to the Ministry of Fisheries for stepping in to assist us and I am sure that our production will increase because transportation has been made easier.”

Nacamaki Women’s Group will also begin work on their seaweed farm this week after their materials were transported to the village.

A fisheries officer has also been deployed to train and assist the women in setting up their farm.

Mr Koroilavesau also visited other sites on the island where the proposed fisheries station and ice plant would be built.

“There are 14 villages on the island that are still trying to recover from the havoc left by TC Winston back in 2016,” he said.

“Now is the time to provide a holistic approach to their rehabilitation and my ministry is certainly glad to be part of your rebuilding process.

“We will carry out the initial work and through the process, hope that you will soon enjoy the services that will be provided by our fisheries station once it is complete.”

Villagers had a talanoa session with Mr Koroilavesau and Government officials.
