Fiji 7s Rugby: COPS Trio For Fiji

Three key members of the winning Police Blue side from the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s have joined the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s extended squad’s training sessions this week.
They are wily halfback Livai Ikanikoda, playmaker Meli Kurisaru and prop Suliano Volivoli.
The Fiji Rugby Union confirmed yesterday that head coach Gareth Baber is going to name his team for the Hong Kong and Singapore tournaments today.
Baber says the team is intently focused on the Hong Kong and Singapore tournaments.
“Right now, the team is working hard and focusing on putting our best possible performance on the park against Kenya in our first match at Hong Kong,” he said.
“What the players are doing with their future beyond the current World Sevens Series should not be impacting the team’s focus right now.”
The Fijians are pooled with New Zealand, Australia and Kenya. The squad had a practice match against Russia at Albert Park, Suva, yesterday.
It is understood that Police playmaker Kurisaru caught Baber’s attention as he controlled the pace of the game to suit his side, which gave them the edge over the opposition.
Kurisaru is the namesake of former national and Nadroga rugby legend, Ratu Meli Kurisaru.
The Fijian 7s side are looking for a capable playmaker after Waisea Nacuqu was ruled out with a fractured collarbone while Vatemo Ravouvou and Amenoni Nasilasila are unavailable for selection.
Olympian Kitione Taliga is expected to make a comeback next month for the Police Blue side after undergoing ankle surgery in the United States.
