Taxi drivers at Valelevu says the Nasinu Town Council’s only public convenience facility is a shame.

They say it is unhygienic, unsafe and a security risk. They claim that despite numerous complaints nothing has been done.

Taxi driver Ram Karan said the public convenience should be relocated.

“We used to use the Valelevu Market convenience, but now it is not allowed anymore. We have no choice but to use the public convenience. Sometimes the smell is so strong that no one would want to use it,” Mr Karan said.

“I have been a driver for the past eight years and this is one of the dirtiest public conveniences I have come across. It is the responsibility of the council to look after this, but nothing has been done.

“In Valelevu there is only one public convenience and I think it is about time the council makes another one. If not, at least keep it clean.”

Another taxi driver, Ruven Kumar, 48, said he worries for his safety when he uses the Valelevu public convenience.

“It is dangerous because it is right at the back. Sometimes when our customers who are women want to use the washroom we actually take them to the supermarket. We do this because we want them to be safe,” Mr Kumar said.

“At night it is worse because it is very dark. Some drivers have been robbed at the public convenience. We are hoping that the council looks into this. The washroom always stinks and sometimes it is unbearable.”

Questions were emailed to the Nasinu Town Council, but no response was received when this edition went to press.
