Opposition Parliamentarian Niko Nawaikula has denied charges of careless driving and failure to comply with requirements following an accident.

He appeared before Magistrate Senileba Levaci yesterday.

Nawaikula allegedly hit a vehicle along Ratu Mara Road in Nabua on May 31, 2018.

It is also alleged that on the same day after the accident, Nawaikula allegedly took off and failed to check for damage to the complainant’s vehicle.

The complainant chased Nawaikula’s vehicle to the intersection near Fiji Dairy Limited to inform him about the accident.

On January 18, 2019, a bench warrant was issued as Nawaikula had failed to appear in court for his plea.

Nawaikula, who is representing himself, told the court that his clerk entered the wrong court date in his diary which is why he was not present in court in January.

Magistrate Levaci cancelled the bench warrant and reissued the bail with the original bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned to November 13 to fix a hearing date.

Nawaikula’s bail was further extended.
