The Commission on the Prerogative of Mercy (Mercy Commission) met three weeks ago and is considering nine inmates’ applications for early release from correctional facilities.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum last night, in response to a comment from SODELPA Member of Parliament, Mosese Bulitavu, clarified that the Mercy Commission had met and was in the process of reviewing those nine applications.

Mr Bulitavu claimed in Parliament that the Mercy Commission had not been formed.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said all Mr Bulitavu had to do was ask during any of their breaks and he would have been informed of the progress.

Mr Bulitavu spoke for close to 15 minutes, making various claims about the Fiji Corrections Services.

The Mercy Commission is chaired by the Attorney-General and other members include:

  • Ben Hazelman;
  • Apakuki Kurusiga;
  • Sitamma Venkatappa; and
  • Justice Shageeth Somaratne

On the petition of any convicted person, the commission may recommend that the President exercise a power of mercy by granting a free or conditional pardon to a person convicted of an offence or remitting all or a part of a punishment.
