A54-year-old radio announcer, who is charged with one count each of manslaughter and driving while there was a concentration of alcohol beyond the excess limit present in his blood, has been remanded in custody.

Pio Ratuwaqa, who is employed by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, appeared before Magistrate Geethani Wijesinghe yesterday.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road at Gardner Place, Nasese.

A team from the Totogo Police Station, Suva, managed to rescue Ratuwaqa and 26-year-old woman Anne Taake from the vehicle, which was partially submerged in water.

Ms Taake was rushed to the CWM Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In court, Police prosecutor Corporal Monish Chandra objected to Ratuwaqa’s application for bail on the grounds that the charges against Ratuwaqa were serious, indictable offences and a life had been lost.

Magistrate Wijesinghe remanded Ratuwaqa for the charge of manslaughter.

The matter has been adjourned until tomorrow (April 3) for mention.
