A petition by Opposition Member of Parliament Anare Jale on the provision of reliable, safe and affordable shipping services for the was tabled in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Jale moved a motion for the petition to be referred to the parliamentary standing committee and it was approved after 23 members voted in favour of it. Twenty-seven MPs voted against the petition and one did not vote.

Mr Jale said shipping services to the Lau Group were far inferior in terms of reliability, safety and affordability compared with shipping services to other parts of Fiji.

“This petition is a culmination of the years of frustration and grave concern,” Mr Jale said.

“The people of Lau look to this August House to trigger the initiative to find an acceptable solution and answer to their plight.”

Mr Jale said women, children and people with disabilities were the most vulnerable in such circumstances.

He added the two boats servicing the Lau Group were old fishing boats and already retired from that route.

“These two boats do not provide adequate cabins for passengers to lie down, but provide seats instead like bus seats in which you are expected to sit in for the whole duration of a trip,” Mr Jale said.
