Seruwaia Vualiku says her son, Seremaia Tuwai’s humility, respect and family-man qualities has helped him become one of the most iconic 7s players in the world.

The half-back created history on Sunday when he became the first player to win five consecutive Hong Kong 7s winner’s medal.

Tuwai’s mother was returning by boat from Nukubalavu, Savusavu, on the night of the final and only heard the good news from one of the passengers.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Ms Vualiku said: “We are not surprised after Tuwai made history in Hong Kong on Sunday night. If it wasn’t for God nothing would have been possible.

“That is what we always remind him before he departs the country for national duties. Even before he leaves the house after packing his suitcases he will seek our blessings, from both his father and I.

“The whole family would pray for him and we always remind him to put God first and then he will see blessings come his way – which is happening now.”

“Jerry is a very humble man. He has so much respect for his parents, siblings and a great family man to his wife and two children.

“We always teach our children to be grateful with any small thing we have but not to forget God who has been with us since day one and that is the message Jerry is carrying to the world.”

Tuwai spoke briefly to the South China Morning Post after the final, dedicating the win to his teammates.

“I’m speechless,” he said.

“To play with such amazing talent, you know they carried me through. I am just so blessed.”
