The results of the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) National Elections are expected to be revealed on Tuesday.

This after the voting for two vice presidents and three executive committee members were conducted yesterday in 23 polling venues across the nation.

5156 FTU members were expected to cast their votes.

For the position of Vice President, the four candidates were Arvind Kumar, Pranesh Sharma, Nakul Deo and Rohitesh Kumar.

For the National Executive Committee, the six candidates were Brij Bhan, Sima Diveka, Madhur Prakash, Dharmend Shankar, Pratosh Kumar and Mohammed Feroz Ali.

Speaking at Rishikul Sanatan College, one of the polling stations, FTU general secretary Agni Deo Singh said they had increased the number of polling venues this year to make voting mode accessible to members.

“The venues included islands like Ovalau and Taveuni together with stations in Savusavu, Bua and Seaqaqa among other places,” Mr Singh said.

“Those who are in the islands were also able to vote through postal mode.

“We had informed our members through our newsletters and emails were also sent out so we are hoping the turnout was good.”

Mr Singh said national officers of the FTU are elected for a two-year term and members had the opportunity to nominate their candidates.

“The national executive role is to initiate and formulate policies for the union; policies that will assist in the operation of the union and maximise benefits to members,” he said.

He added a number of other positions have gone uncontested which are: national president Muniappa Goundar, Vice president – Vidya Singh (position reserved for a woman), general secretary – Agni Deo Singh, assistant general secretary – Rajnesh Lingam, national treasurer – Sashi Mahendra Shandil, publicity officer – Manhar Kumar, personnel officer – Rameshwar Lal
