The Standing Committee for Justice, Law and Human Rights received submissions from various individuals in Sabeto, Nadi for harsher punishments for sexual offenders.

This was after the Standing Committee had its first ever meeting with residents of Sabeto to hear of their issues and take into account their submissions regarding the Sex Offenders Bill.

The Standing Committee’s Deputy Chairperson, Rohit Sharma said the public’s reaction was overwhelming and very supportive of the Bill.

“The submissions they gave was really helpful to the Committee and the Committee will go back and see how we can take their concern and fit it in the Bill,” Mr Sharma said.

“Some of the things that they have submitted regarding the Sex Offenders Bill that the punishment should be harsh especially with rape cases.

“They said that the accused should not be given a second chance, they should be sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Mr Sharma said it was mostly men who had given their submissions. “There were a lot of individuals mostly men were the ones making their submissions.”

He added the submissions would take at least three weeks to cover and the next area that the Committee would be covering was from Vanua Levu to Taveuni.

“We are trying to go into the villages and rural settlements where we can cover these things,” he added.”
