Coke Games 2019: Sea Training Helps Savu Win

Rupeni Savu trained hard and never gave up as he took out the junior boy’s javelin final at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.
The Sanima, Kadavu native won gold with a throw of 45.60 metres while Sulio Naibe of Napuka Junior Secondary School finished second (45.56m) and Eremodo Liganivai of Ratu Kadavulevu School won bronze with a throw of 43.37m.
Despite the lack of training equipment on the island, Savu utilised what he comes across to help him prepare for the Games.
“Every day I train out at sea,” he said.
I fill the sack with sand and I carry it on my shoulder running 100metres out in the sea.
“We don’t have a gym or even weights but we have the sea and sand which we use.
“It was an easy journey for me since this is my second year to the Games but participating in a different event.
“Last year I took part in the 800m but this time I trained for five months and I’m happy that I have won a gold medal.”
