2018 Rape Cases Trial Dates Moved Forward To 2020

Rape cases which took place in 2018 will have their trial dates at the High Court in Suva in 2020.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo, whose court in the legal fraternity is known as the ‘rape court’, yesterday revealed that his court diary was filled of trial dates of rape cases from before 2018.

Justice Temo made the statement yesterday while fixing the trial date of a rape case which took place in 2018.

The one week trial will commence on April 6 and conclude on April 10, 2020.

The man had allegedly raped a 15-year-old victim in her home in Nasinu.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Meli Vosawale told the court that the circumstance of the case was that the accused had grabbed the complainant by her arms inside her home and took her to her bedroom, told her to undress herself and forcefully raped her without her consent.

He also told the court that the accused had allegedly threatened to kill the complainant if she raised an alarm or spoke of the incident to anyone.

Mr Vosawale sought for a week’s trial and told the court that the State was relying on the direct evidence of the complainant, medical report of the complainant confirming on the injuries at the genital area and will be calling three witnesses.
