Amateur boxer Jonathan Hill is confident of winning a spot on Team Fiji for the Pacific Games after impressively beating Viliame Rokobuli in their 75kg fight during the Fiji Games yesterday.

Hill, who is the elder brother of 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Winston, believes he has what it takes to win gold in Samoa this July.

Fiji’s top amateur boxing talent are battling for a spot on the team at the Police Mobile Unit headquarters in Narere, Nasinu.

Hill has emerged as a top contender after his victory over Rokobuli, who is the reigning 2018 Sukuna Bowl champion in the 75kg division.

“I am happy with the way I fought, although there are things I want to work on before the fight today,” he said.

“Of course this is just the beginning and I have to lift my standards if I want to be among the best in Fiji and the region.”

Legendary trainer and World Boxing hall of famer Johnny Lewis was in Hill’s corner alongside his brother, who will fight in the 69 kg division today.

“They both play a huge role in my fights,” Hill said.

“During the fight, I’m in the zone focussing on the opponent and nothing else. But they both watch from outside and point out things I need to do better and am doing right.”

The finals will be held today at the same venue.
