The 2019 Fiji Games basketball competition will be the final platform for athletes to prove themselves if they are to make the cut for the Pacific Games in Apia, Samos on July 7-20

Eight men and five women teams will be vying for selection in the three day competition which started at the FMF Gymnasium, Suva yesterday.

Basketball Fiji chief operations officer Lai Puamau said best 12 male and 11 female athletes will be selected after the Fiji Games.

“We have eight men and five women teams participating.

The games started off on Thursday and we have bronze and gold medal playoffs of Saturday,” Puamau said

“The events were organised due to the limited competitions venues as the Vodafone Arena is still under renovations.

We are lucky to get the approval from the Fiji Sports Council to host the games at the FMF Gymnasium.

“We are looking at selecting the best 12 players to represent the national side while best 11 players from the female team.

“The women’s side is currently the defending Pacific Games champions so they will aim to retain their title.”

The men finished up as runners up in their last outing and will be going for gold in Apia.”

Women- Raiwaqa– USP 2 (WBD); USP 1 27-43 Raiwaqa; Fiji Black 33-30 Fiji White

Men – Fiji Black 57-12 Lautoka; Nadi 31 – 42 Raiwaqa; Fiji Black 37-20 Raiwaqa (1)
