Passengers and crew of the South Island Traders-owned MV Liahona II are safe after it lost its ramp in the high seas while sailing to Kadavu yesterday.

Skipper Akuila Cama told the Fiji Sun that when the vessel lost its ramp, the safety of the 121 passengers was foremost to him.

“I went down to the deck to check the car- go and the watertight doors. They were set, so I called the crew to go down to the deck and check the flow of water,” he said.

He said the passengers panicked, but, he gave them his assurance they would be safe. Captain Cama said the next thing was to change the route course to reach the nearest village, which was Kavala.

“I also instructed my engineer on the speed to use in this type of situation, and after few hours I was assured that we would reach Kavala Bay safely, ” he said.

He said there first port of call was Dravuni, but for safety reasons he changed the course to Kavala.

He added that they would shelter at Kavala Bay and assess the damage.

When the weather is fine, he said, they would drop off all passengers.

“This is possible as we will be sailing on coastal waters.”

The managing director of the South Island Traders, Ulaiyasi Baivatu, who was onboard the Liahona II, said everything was under control and thanked Captain Cama for his calmness in controlling of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Commander Maritime, Ledua Yaco, said when they received the message about the inter-island barge, MV Liahona II, the navy vessel RFNS Kikau was dispatched with a rescue medical team to escort the vessel to Kadavu and to render assistance if needed.
