Two brothers in Taveuni watched helplessly as their father, Josese Bale, stabbed their mother to death.

Bale stabbed his wife 16 times, slashed her face near her eye and stabbed her chest rupturing her lungs. He also stabbed her stomach and heels.

It was after this frenzied attack that the boys, 11-year-old and 12-year-old, saw their mother motionless lying in a pool of blood.

Bale was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 18, 2019, by Justice Paul Madigan at the High Court in Labasa.

He is to serve a minimum term of 16 years before being eligible for parole.

Bale and his wife lived in Somosomo Village on Taveuni with three children, aged 15,12 and 11. Another child aged 17 was away at a boarding school.

On June 10, 2018, the mother and her three children had gone to a celebratory lunch at a neighbor’s house.

Bale was at home drinking alcohol which he had been doing the evening before.

After the lunch, his wife returned home and a heated argument broke out between them.

The 11-year-old son returned home at 2pm and saw his father fetching his pig hunting knife.

Being alarmed, the boy ran to get his 12-year-old brother, they returned home to see their father with the knife in his hands standing over their mother.

The room was covered with blood.

The boys screamed and begged their father to stop, but he chased them out of the house.

The villagers rushed the woman to the local hospital, but she was pronounced dead the same day.

Bale is 39 years old and had been a farmer earning less than $100 a week.
