The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team won the Challenge Trophy at the Kitakyushu Sevens in Ja­pan yesterday.

After losing all their pool games against Ireland, England and United States on Saturday, the Saiasi Fuli-coached side bounced back to beat Japan 28-17 in the semifinal before thrashing Spain 41-12.

Fiji picked up four points and stand ninth on the World Rugby Women Sevens Series.

But the highlight of the two-day event was trans-tasman neighbours Australia and New Zealand eliminat­ed in the Cup quarterfinals.

New Zealand earlier lost 9-29 to France in pool play and was then eliminated by the United States 26-19 in the Cup quarterfinal.

Australia earlier lost 14-17 to Canada in pool play and was eliminated 7-21 by England in the Cup quarterfinal.

The teams played for the 5th place playoff won by the Kiwis 34-26.
