Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has started patching potholes after the recent spell of continuous heavy rain.

Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said repair works had begun on Princes Road.

“Four pothole patching crews have been dispatched to Princes Road currently working between Samabula and Tacirua,” he said yesterday.

“Despite weather conditions making this difficult to carry out, the FRA has instructed these works, to manage the risk of safety hazards to the public.

He said plans for full-width structural pavement repairs in the worst affected areas were in place such as in Tamavua and Waila.

“All of the FRA resources are deployed throughout the country to work on emergency conditions and provide safe access during this period of intense and sustained rainfall,” Mr Moore said.

“Once they are freed from these duties we will return to the full-width structural rehabilitation work.

“In the meantime, we will continue to deploy teams wherever needed to provide safe conditions.”

Meanwhile, with continuous heavy rain over the past week, motorists are complaining about deteriorating road conditions with the growing number of big potholes.

Taxi driver Uma Raj, 43 said: “Replacing tyres time and again is quite expensive. In some places, the potholes are really bad so in times of heavy rain, vehicles unfortunately get damaged.

“It is a loss to business because I have to bear the cost of repairs.”

Prior to driving a taxi, Mr Raj, was a truck driver for several years.

“It is more difficult at night because in this rainy weather, potholes fill up with water and it becomes difficult to see them.”
