Surf Life Saving Australia has partnered Fiji Surf Company and their lifeguard arm-Fijian Lifeguards Service in a train the trainer programme.

The historic lifeguard trainer programme is being conducted by Steve Allan from Surf Lifesaving Australia at the Fiji Surf Co Warehouse based on Sonaisali Beach, outside Nadi from April 23 to 26.

Mr Allan is an experienced trainer with many years under his belt. He is training three Fijian Lifeguards to be trainers so they can carry out lifeguard training throughout Fiji in the various tourism/local industries and various community services for villages, rural areas and remote islands.

Fiji Surf Co founder Ian Ravouvou Muller said, “tourism welcomes visitors to our shores, but there were no lifeguards on duty to care for their safety in the water- this will soon change with qualified Fijian Lifeguards being trained to provide this critical service to the industry and community.

“Having trained Fijian Lifeguards will show our commitment towards safety in Fiji and will give Fiji that point of difference over other regional countries when visitors are choosing a destination to travel to.” He added that they are in talks with FNU to ensure that Fijian Lifeguard Training can be included within their curriculum.

“This is the first lifeguard train the trainer programme conducted in Fiji and it would not have been made possible if it was not for the commitment shown by Surf Life- saving Australia, Fiji Surf Co and the dedicated Fijian Lifeguards that have the vision and energy to see a positive change for a safer Fiji around our ocean and waterways,” Muller said.

This has been made possible by the kind donations and volunteers from the New Colombo Plan, University of South Australia, OMEP, Rotary Club, Pacific Sports Partnership, Fiji Surf Co and the Fijian Lifeguard Service.
