A student has died from injuries he suffered when he was allegedly bullied by another student.

Mosese Kubunavanua, 16, a student of Ratu Navula College in Nadi died at the Lautoka Hospital on April 20.

He was allegedly assaulted by another student while watching the 2019 Fiji Bitter Nawaka Sevens at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on March 16.

The same student allegedly bullied Mosese previously, according to the parents.

Distraught father, Pastor Kavekini Varo, 54, said his family was still trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident report had been made and Police investigation had been underway since.

A post-mortem examination report stated the victim was assaulted, which caused brain abscess that led to septicaemia (blood poisoning, especially that caused by bacteria or their toxins). Pastor Varo said his son’s funeral be held today at the Sikituru Village in Nadi.

Pastor Varo said: “The incident was reported to the Police on March 20.

“Until now, we feel that investigation was only taken seriously after his death.

My son cannot respond to questions now. He could have straight after the matter was reported.”

He said his son was loved by many. “Justice is what we seek! Police officers should put themselves in our shoes and maybe they will realise the experience we are going through, waiting for justice to happen.

“Students please let your parents know if you are being bullied.

“Sharing it with them does not make you look weak. Bullying must be condemned by all at all levels.”
