Tears flowed as family and friends arrived in numbers to bid their farewell to Ratu Navula College student Mosese Kubunavanua at Navoci in Nadi yesterday.

His teacher Alumeci Raratabu during the eulogy said she knew the late student back in 2016 when he first enrolled in Year Nine.

She also apologized on behalf of the school for any shortcoming.

“I came to know him on enrolment day where he asked me if I wanted to drink water, so he poured some water into the glass,” she said.

“I commend his parents for such a great upbringing. He is just an example of the Moses that is written in the Bible.”

His uncle, former Flying Fijian flanker Kitione Salawa said: “This lad visited our home twice and the only topic we shared was about rugby.

He was inspired to be a rugby player.”

His father Pastor Kavekini Varo, 54, said: “It was a very painful moment; words cannot describe how to feel, to nurture a son since birth, then to lose him at the age of 16.”

The 16-year-old boy died at the Lautoka Hospital on April 20 after he was allegedly assaulted by a fellow student while watching the

2019 Fiji Bitter Nawaka Sevens at the Prince Charles Park in Nadi on March 16.

The deceased was originally admitted at the hospital on March 20, a few days after becoming sick.

The post-mortem report stated

the victim had a history of assault, which caused brain abscess that lead to septicaemia (blood poisoning, especially that caused by bacteria or their toxins).

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro yesterday said: “The motive of the  assault was because of a girl and not bullying as claimed.”

Mosese’s parents had said he was being bullied.
