Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has assured nurses that they have the Government’s full support.

While speaking at the Fiji Nursing Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Suva yesterday, Dr Waqainabete said his presence was a testament that Government valued nurses.

“You are the backbone of health in our nation,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“As the Government we believe in quality, we believe in leaving no Fijian behind.

“We will also make sure that our people, our nurses and doctors who are working in these areas will continue to receive the support that they need to be able to provide that level of expertise.”

He added next year would mark 200 years of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, and in respect of this, the minister supported that 2020 be the Year of the Nurse.

“We value you, your services and we support 2020 to be Year of the Nurse,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“I have spoken to the Chief Nursing Officer about how we can celebrate it right around the country.”

He said they needed to ensure that the importance of nursing was shared so that the next generation continued to join this noble profession.

“It is important not only in terms of the work that they do, but also in terms of protecting the health of our nation,” the minister said.
