A dispute has sprung up after the final decision  was made by the Native Land Commission in installing Ratu Jone Qomate as the Tui Labasa in December last year.

iTaukei Appeals Tribunal chairperson Aminiasi Katonivualiku said they stepped in after receiving a letter from Ratu Kiniviliame Waqanitoga appealing against the decision.

“By law, the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission has given the title to Ratu Jone Qomate as the Tui Labasa,” Mr Katonivualiku said.

“A period of 90 days was given to anyone who wanted to appeal against the decision,” he said.

“The tribunal had started off last Tuesday and the appellant had not given all their submissions to Ratu Jone’s side.

“We had a few hours in sorting all the relevant documentation from both sides of the party, so that we can cross examine them,” the former magistrate said.

“Ratu Kiniviliame and his two witnesses were then cross examined,” Mr Katonivualiku said.

Ratu Kiniviliame represents the faction of the chiefly Wasavulu clan – the Drauna family- claiming they are the rightful holder of the Tui Labasa title.

The tribunal hearing of the title of the Tui Labasa will be documented and further analysed by the tribunal committee before a ruling will be made on the May 15 at the Nasekula Village Hall.

Ratu Jone Qomate was installed by Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and the people of Naduri at Nasekula village in late August last year.

Ratu Jone is the son of Ratu Joeli Qomate who held the title from 1997 to 2004. Ratu Joeli had succeeded his older brother Senator Ratu Tevita Qomate, who passed away in July, 1997.

The fight for the position of Tui Labasa has been ongoing for generations among the two families from the same chiefly clan.

Tui Macuata is aware of the dispute over the title of the Tui Labasa and will only comment after the ruling on May 15.
