Exterior look of the newly renovated Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva.

For as long as I can remember the Tanoa Plaza Hotel has stood in Suva, back then a rare high rise in a field of two and three level buildings.

I never really took much notice of it, you never do when a building is right opposite the office you work in.

The property, as the name suggests, is part of the Y P Reddy group of hotels that has properties through Fiji including the iconic Rakiraki Hotel, famous for the amazing curries and having a full size lawn bowls green for guests.

It is something of a YP Reddy group tradition that none of the hotels is the same design or follows the same theme.

The Tanoa Plaza was built in and stated operation in 2003 and a car park was added in 2005.

The Reddy Group also own the Tanoa Waterfront (Lautoka), Tanoa International, Tanoa Apartments and Tanoa Skylodge (Nadi), Rakiraki Hotel and the Tanoa Tusitala (Samoa) and the Dateline (Tonga) plus the Tanoa Russell Cottages in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The Tanoa Plaza has sixty rooms, including two disability rooms, a gym with lap pool, and a number of other areas for their guests to enjoy.

From the outside the Tanoa Plaza was pretty much as I remembered it, but the car park was a lot bigger and there was plenty of room available.

Approach to the hotel

The approach to the hotel from the car park is directly into the lobby and the reception desk and here is where you start to feel that you are in for a different experience.

From the lobby entry you can see a waiting lounge, the dining room and the coffee shop with the bar set in behind these, slightly obscured from the other services but with an open view of the street.

The Lobby has a spacious feel with a lot of natural light.

The coffee shop and adjacent dining room also have the spacious feel and openness that the whole ground floor offers.

The staff behind reception desk are welcoming and quickly organise the luggage to be taken to the room while you fill in the already prepared paperwork.

About here you start to get a feel of the difference from many of the hotels in Fiji, particularly those on Denarau.

My immediate reaction was that it was like an international branded hotel in Southern Europe, probably France or Spain.

The two lifts are quite small but very efficient, taking you at a leisurely pace to your room level.

You exit onto an open corridor that stretches left or right from the lifts and there is a feeling of calmness and a sense that time is not re Exterior look of the newly renovated Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva.

You move to your room and gain entrance with the digital card, push open the door and here is where you really feel the southern European style.

Renovation plans

The Tanoa Plaza is undergoing a renovation, not a paint and touch type but a full remove and replace type and the feeling of the rooms is spacious, filled with light and very carefully thought out in the placement of even the smallest detail.

As you enter there is a bathroom on the left and a black steel frame to the right that is both a wardrobe, storage space for luggage and provides a shelf for the small bar fridge and smaller personal items.

Further into the room there is a double bed on the left and a flat screen TV to the right with a narrow shelf below it where you can leave all the small things you will need during your stay.

Against the end wall with large windows with sliding curtains there is a neat chaise lounge and a chair and small table.

Above the bed head is a panel of waving green design which provides basically the only colour highlight in the room.

The bathroom from the inside is all glass and mirrors but is separated from the outside by dark toned panels against the glass.

The shower is nicely large and has two shower options, a very effective drench or a normal hand held device. The water flow is controlled by a tiny lever at the base of the unit.

The clever use of the black frame against the wall to perform all the storage tasks creates an incredible sense of space in the room and the basically white colour of the walls helps.

With the curtains open the whole room is flooded with light. The air conditioning is adequate without being aggressive.

We had dinner in the evening downstairs and found it very relaxed with excellent service from the staff.

The menu is limited is choices but covers a full range of European dishes plus a curry choice and fish.

There is a selection of entrees and if you are still hungry at the end of the meal, a small number of interesting deserts.

For breakfast the next morning we again enjoyed the excellent attention of the staff.

Again the selection is not vast but every item is carefully selected to ensure that every taste is satisfied.

In-House party selection

The in-house pastry selection is very delicate and worth the visit.

The bar is relaxed and comfortable and mainly used by the hotel guests and a smattering of local businessmen discussing the day over drinks.

Yes, there is a pool outside where you can relax, but most people find the inside facilities much too pleas- ant to leave.

The Tanoa Plaza represents a pleasant and relaxing haven in the heart of the Suva business district, with the downtown area and Government buildings a short walk away.

The bar and coffee shop are an ideal place to hold a business meeting and there are several small conference rooms on the first floor should you need to accommodate a number of people.

Not only will the Tanoa Plaza give you an effective base for business but it will provide a very relaxing and comfortable experience for your next trip to Suva.
