The Asia Pacific Taekwondo officials are working hard on putting together a strong team for an international championship in New Zealand next year.

They participated in a taekwondo championship event in New Zealand last year and won 20 medals out of the 16 athletes that took part.

The sport had their first club championship at the Vunimono Hall in Nausori yesterday.

Administrator Anthony Valentine told SUNsports that they normally have their club championships every two to three months.

“It starts from white belt right up to black belt which is the heavyweight division.

“At the moment we’ve a vast amount of students attending today’s classes. “We only have Nausori and Nakasi clubs combine and so far we have 40 fighters registered. The majority is from the Nausori clubs,” Valentine said.

“Now we are working on teaching these kids new techniques because this sport will come in handy for self- defense but more importantly in teaching these children discipline.”
