Members of Savusavu Rotary Club and Savusavu Town Council workers worked together to beautify Savusavu Town on March 18, 2019.

A collaboration between Savusavu Rotary Club, Savusavu Town Council and Ministry of Forestry led to a beautification project in Savusavu Town earlier this month.

They worked together replanting a number of trees in planter tubs around town.

Seremaia Cakacaka, a Rotarian said this was part of the  Savusavu Rotary Club’s town beautification project.

“With the help of the town council workers, we cleaned out the dead roots and old soil of the first four planter tubs,” Mr Cakacaka said.

“The bottoms of these tubs are now open to the soil below so trees with a tap root can grow down and not become pot bound.”

He said two planter tubs now have soursop (Annona muricata) trees planted in them.

“They are classed as small trees with leaves, bark and flowers that are scented,” he said.

“Protective netting has been placed around the two tubs with a small opening on one side for removal of weeds and adding of compost.

“The plan is for a total of 20 new trees to be installed in the planter tubs along the main street with additional new trees planted along the foreshore as well.

“A sign with a positive message about trees has been securely attached to the netting.

“The sign draws attention to the role of trees in combatting climate change, and highlights the partners in the project.”

Judy Cakacaka, also a Rotarian, said they want to remind the people of Savusavu about the important role trees play in our environment.

“Trees provide shade and oxygen, and absorbing carbon dioxide which is the main factor in climate change,” she said.

“We trust that people will demonstrate civic pride by caring for these new trees.”
