The first release of the Wolbachia mosquitoes within the Nadi-Lautoka corridor was held at Narewa Village in Nadi in the Western Division yesterday.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete and the New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Jonathan Curr, officiated at the event.

Narewa Villagers joined dignitaries to release mosquitoes as part of the World Mosquito Program’s (WMP’s) Wolbachia method, aimed at reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika.

The ceremonial release commenced the WMP’s Western Division Project, which will expand Wolbachia coverage to an additional 120,000 people funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme.

Dr Waqainabete said the release of the Wolbachia mosquitoes could potentially save hundreds of lives within the Nadi and the Lautoka corridor.

“The intervention that we all agree is much needed in the Western Division given the Western Division’s reputation there is also a hotspot for dengue outbreaks,” he said.

“Fiji is one of the countries in the world implementing the Wolbachia method and this regains the level of trust that partners with stakeholders and communities and also the commitment of this Fijian Government in fighting such diseases using this innovative tool.”

Dr Waqainabete said the ministry’s partnership with the WMP was to help create dynamic and a robust health system to counter such diseases.
