Nutrition and exercise remain the key challenges to fighting non-communicable diseases (NCD), staff members and students of the University of the South Pacific have been told.

The comment came from Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete while launching the USP’s Wellness and Fitness Week yesterday.

“NCDs are more of a social issue rather than a medical issue. We must focus on replacing illness with wellness and this can be done if we play our part,” said Dr Waqainabete.

“Do not wait to fall unwell to practice wellness.”

The initiative by the USP organised under the Campus Life department has been an ongoing effort for the past seven years. It aims to engage students and staff to move towards a healthy lifestyle.

“Changing the mindset at tertiary institutions, therefore, forms an important part of the solution to health and wellbeing and events such as this are a great platform of empowering students to make informed choices for their health and wellness,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“Wellness moves public health away from medical treatments and interventions, and more towards lifestyle and social change.”

The minister encouraged the university to not only make USP a knowledgeable institution, but also an environment that promoted health and wellbeing.

“It is not only what we leaders leave behind that matters, but what future leaders can do for your younger siblings to follow is equally important,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“If we fail to do this now, then we are heading towards disaster and it will be very late to reverse the situation.”
