Boxer James Singh is confident of being the country’s new heavyweight champion by the end of the year.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Singh said his eight- round fight against Fiji heavyweight champion Petero Qica on June 29 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi is a step closer to his dream.

“I’ve been working on this from day one,” he said.

“He (Qica) is a good boxer but I see Qica as another fighter who is standing on my way.”

Singh who recently fought against the region’s top heavyweight boxers David Light and Arsene Fosso said this has helped him build-up for the Qica fight.

“It was a good stepping stone for me and now I’m focused on my preparation and should be ready come the day of the fight. This is going to be Qica’s toughest fight.”

The hard hitting Nadi boxer said Qica had been fighting against weak opponents and this would be a real test for him.

“I want to challenge him for the Fiji heavyweight title after this fight,” he added.

Boxing Commission of Fiji director Usman ‘Lale’ Ali confirmed that the programme has been sanctioned. The main bouts will be title fights.

Abhay Chand of Navosa takes on Naitasiri’s Tomu Gaunavou for the country’s vacant super middleweight title.

The other sees newly- crowned Fiji middleweight champion Sebastian Singh making his first title defence against Siliveni Nawai of the Mulomulo Boxing Club in Nadi.

‘I’ve made it clear to the boxers that they meet the weight they have signed for in their contracts,” Ali said.

“Any boxer failing to meet the weight requirements will not be allowed to fight.”
