The Fijian Pearls are the favorites to win the Arafura Games after scoring big wins in their first two matches on day one of the competition on Wednesday at the Marrara Netball Centre in Darwin.

Unbeaten in three matches in Singapore last week, the Vicki Wilson-coached side walloped SAASTA Red 138-1 and beat Singapore 83-18.

Regarded as the world’s best shooter during an international career that has spanned 15 years, Wilson was known for her pinpoint accuracy with netball.

Now as the coach of the Fiji women team she’s pointing her laser beam focus on to the Pearls and will be positively glowing with pride.

“I’m very excited to be here at the Arafura Games as the coach of the Fiji team. It’s a great opportunity for us to run the entire squad in preparation for the Netball World Club,” Wilson said.

Wilson said seven of the players from Singapore went home with seven new players joining the extended team in Darwin.

“This is a unique opportunity for the girls, firstly to be able to play and to train in such a world-class facility.

“To be able to get out here on an indoor court where netball is played internationally and to have the girls walk in and feel great about themselves that’s really important. Not too many people get to represent their country.”

Wilson, who has been coach of the Fiji Pearls for three years, said this is a great opportunity for the local community to watch some fast-paced international play.

“It also gives the chance for young girls to look up to some role models, to watch girls who get out there and train hard and want to be the best that they can be. It all starts here.”

The Pearls played the Australia Defence team when this edition went to press last night and will play their final pool match against Palmerston NT today at 11am.
