The Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Bala says it is important to keep the game of football drug-free.

Bala made the comment while officially opening the 29th Fiji Football Association Cup Tournament, (Fiji FACT) which is sponsored by Vodafone Fiji at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

He said it was also important for Fiji football to improve their world rankings.

“Sports in general, plays an important role in our nation, it unifies us as a nation, it contributes to nation building and creates an environment for a lasting friendship,” Bala said.

“The Fiji FACT in the last 29 years has brought together sportsmen and sportswomen from across the nation to show their skills and talents with some findings their way to secure overseas contracts.”

Bala added Government had programmes in place in trying to improve sporting facilities that would help youths realise their potential.

He added there were talks to upgrade Lautoka’s Churchill Park.

Vodafone’s Head of Enterprise, Antonio Kitione said Vodafone’s sponsorship boost for the next five years had shown Fiji had so far become a great turf to witness raw talents.

“With the sponsorship boost for the next five years and the hard yards executed by Fiji FA, officials and the team, the Fiji FACT has become a great headhunting ground for talents,” he said.

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer, Jone Nakauvadra wished the Lautoka team well and hope they would win the Fiji FACT.

Meanwhile, two legends were honoured with medals by Bala. They are Mitieli Turaganileli, a former Ba player and Naga Sanjeeri, a former Lautoka player.
