Medical professionals must continue with professional development, says Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

The Minister for Health and Medical Services made this statement while clarifying nurse registration issues.

He said there were councils that were independent of the ministry which monitored medical professionals, including nurses, to see that they met required standards.

The council also ensure that these professionals continue with professional development, which has a point system.

“Unfortunately, there are professionals, irrespective of whether they are nurse, some of them don’t meet the requirements, some don’t pay on time to be registered,” he said.

Dr Waqainabete added that registration was so important and the system had changed compared to few years ago “where when you become a doctor, you are a doctor for life”.

He added that it was important for medical authorities to assess the professional development of medical professionals to ensure that they were practising their calling safely.
