Justice Temo says courts will continue to pass long prison sentences

A judge says the courts will not tolerate the abuse of children who are the future of the country.

Justice Salesi Temo said the courts would continue to pass long prison sentences as a warning to would-be child rapists.

Justice Temo made the remarks on Friday when he jailed a 36-year-old man from Ovalau for raping his eight-year old niece on October 24, 2018, at their village.

The man was charged with one count of rape and one of sexual assault.

Justice Temo said: “By offending against the child, you had no regard to her right as a child, her right as a human being and her right to live a peaceful and happy life. You have also caused heartache and sadness to her family.”

Justice Temo sentenced him to 11 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 10 years imprisonment, effective forthwith.
