Swire Shipping Fijian Latui will host two Global Rapid Rugby’s (GRR) Pacific Showcase Series to prepare for the GRR competition next year.

Latui will host Kagifa Samoa next Saturday, May 18 and face Western Force on May 25 at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

GRR matches are slightly shorter than the traditional 80 minutes and have other variations from standard rugby laws with the intention to increase the speed of the game.

“Our main focus right now is to get these players familiarise themselves with the rules, since it’s different from rugby union and prepare them for next year,” said Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer O’Connor said.

“We are looking forward to prepare these players for the four matches.”

The Latui will be coached by Senirusi Seruvakula, with the 49-year-old having enjoyed plenty of success with both the Fijian Warriors and the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua sides, winning both the Pacific Rugby Challenge and the National Rugby Championship.

LAW VARIATIONS

1) Matches last 70 minutes (compared with 80 minutes under the standard rugby union laws),

2) Time limits for scrums (1 minute) and lineouts (45 seconds to set),

3) Defensive 22 metr area kicking change – No gain in ground *ever* when kicking direct to touch – even from within your 22 – the same as the World Rugby law for outside the 22.

4) A 9-point ‘power try’ for attacks launched within 22 meters of the scoring team’s own try line.
