The meeting is the second biggest event held here after the ADB annual meeting last week in Denarau.

Fiji’s efforts in playing the critical role in the Pacific, continues to show as we host the 4th South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting this week.

Permanent Secretary for Defence, Manasa Lesuma said Fiji’s second high level meeting in just two weeks showed Fiji’s capabilities to organise events and successfully execute them, sent out a strong message to the region.

“It is integral that high level discussion meetings of this sort, builds Fiji’s defence and security frameworks,” Mr Lesuma said.

“This meeting ensures the continued synchronising of efforts and collaboration towards addressing, both traditional and non-traditional security challenges.”

He added that terrorism acts were starting to trickle into our region, however through measured response, we can reduce the chance or neutralise the risks of these acts happening in the Pacific.”

“Fiji was recently inducted as a member in 2017 and to host the next SPDMM conference, which begins this week definitely is a first for Fiji and shows the commitment we have towards regional security,” said Mr Lesuma.

Welcome ceremony

The Defence Ministers of member countries together with their delegates were traditionally welcomed at the Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa last night.

Minister for Defence, Inia Seruiratu, hosted his counterparts to a dinner meeting, setting the scene of the SPDMM, while the French Ambassador hosted a private dinner for Chiefs of Defence of member countries at the Radisson Blu.

The South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting begins today, where Mr Seruiratu and Mr Mark Ron will host delegates to a breakfast discussion on climate change.
