Reviving Rotuman culture and its importance to the younger generation is a vital part of Rotuma Day celebrations, says Fiji Rotuma Association chairman Paserio Furivai.

Mr Furivai said the focus this year was on Rotuman youths in the sustainability of their culture and to encourage them to take pride in their culture and heritage.

“Our focus is to help youths become interested, motivated and to be proud of who they are and where they come from,” he said.

Mr Furivai said about 5000 people had passed through the celebration venue, Suva’s FMF Gymnasium.

He said the Rotuman language was dying fast and people needed to be reminded of its sad truth.

“We realise our language is dying fast. If we do not help the young ones to speak the language then we will lose our Rotuman language and once you lose a language, you lose a culture,” Mr Furivai said.

“I urge parents to disseminate the Rotuman culture to our children and for more advocacy on this matter.”

The two-day event’s theme was “Rotuma: Rotu Ma ‘Ontou”, which means “My Identity and Heritage is my Spirituality and Faith”.
