Murder Accused Fronts Court

It is alleged that on May 8, 2019, at Qeleya Road in Lami, Raiwalui murdered New Zealand national Ashkan Farsani Rikthegazader. Mr Rikthegazader was a businessman involved in the export of agricultural produce.

A 32-year-old unemployed man of Lami facing a murder charge appeared yesterday in the Suva Magistrates Court.

Rusiate Sogotubu Raiwalui appeared before Magistrate Deepika Prakash.

It is alleged that on May 8, 2019, at Qeleya Road in Lami, Raiwalui murdered New Zealand national Ashkan Farsani Rikthegazader.

Mr Rikthegazader was a businessman involved in the export of agricultural produce.

Mr Rikthegazader was staying at a hotel in Suva and was identified by a friend.

He was found near the Accident and Emergency Ward at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva with stab wounds and attempts by medical authorities to revive him proved futile.

Mr Rikthegazader seen being dropped off in a silver-grey Prius, which was later found abandoned at Tacirua, Suva.

Police prosecutor Corporal Luke Qerewaqa served the accused with full phase disclosures.

The charges were read to Raiwalui in the iTaukei language and he responded and said that he understood the charges.

Magistrate Prakash said the offence Raiwalui was charged with was an indictable offence and transferred the matter to the High Court in Suva. She also gave the accused 21 days to file any alibi notice if he wished to do so.

Raiwalui was remanded in custody and told to make a formal bail application before the High Court.

The matter was adjourned to May 28 for first call in the High Court in Suva.
