Overwhelming support poured in yesterday for Atelaite Koto and her two children, Graham and Jimilai.

Fijians here and abroad were touched by their story and wanted to assist. In whatever way or form, it depicts the love we as human beings have for one another when one is in need.

After reading the story, many would have realised how fortunate they are to have a roof over their head, food on the table and a warm place to sleep.

For Ms Koto and her sons, simply having their independence and not having to be given the cold shoulder was enough. Shelter was secondary. So was food.

For two weeks since they moved into their shed or vale va kenani, they’ve had just enough food to get by. Some of the 20 plus families who live in the Togomasi area in Dratabu, Nadi, assist the family. Monthly social welfare assistance also keeps them going.

For water, the stream nearby was sufficient to wash and boil to drink.

Our Nadi reporter Mereleki Nai observed that there was no toilet facility nearby. Perhaps a shared facility was used.

Sadly, both Graham and Jimilai do not attend school. Ms Koto cannot afford to buy their uniforms and school stationery.

Yesterday a gentleman informed our Nadi reporter that he was willing to support the education of the two boys.

Others wanted to donate food, bedding and clothing. Some offered up prayers for the family – that their needs will be met.

Some suggested that the family inquire with either HART or the Salvation Army for assistance.

For those wishing to get in touch with Ms Koto, they can contact Litea Waqa, a neighbour on mobile 2779851.
