Foul play is suspected in a possible arson attempt on a house in Nadovi, Nadi yesterday.

Ajendra Singh, 43, his wife, Jotika Wati, son, Sahil Singh and daughter, Prisha Singh were alerted by neighbours in the early hours of the morning after flames were seen coming from the back door of their house.

Mr Singh, a pineapple farmer, said his neighbour, who was still awake at that time, saw the fire when it just started.

“My priority and  main concern was getting my family to safety,” he said.

“This is my father’s property, but he passed away in 2003.

“This is the first time something like this has happened to us and I suspect it is intentional foul play by someone to set our house on fire.”

Mr Singh said luckily his neighbours had seen the fire at its early stage and raised the alarm.

“If we had to wait another five minutes I don’t think we would still have our house by now,” he said.

“My neighbours managed to fill buckets of water and quickly put out the fire.”

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said no report had been lodged at the Nadi Police Station.
