Students of Yasawa North College in Nacula hosted the Vodafone Fijian Bati head coach Brandon Costin for the first time in school on Tuesday afternoon.

Costin and his family were on a holiday at the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort in Nacula Island, Yasawa when they toured the school where he conducted a rugby league clinic with the students.

School vice-principal Romuluse Nakiole said: “Coach Costin visited the school with other tourists on Tuesday afternoon that’s where he saw the boys and he felt that he needed to do some rugby league clinic with them.

“He introduced himself to the school and we were surprise and at the same time excited to host our Fiji Bati coach and our students were happy to be involved with the clinic,” Nakiole said.

Costin said he was happy to spend the afternoon with students conducting clinic and would like to have it more often.

“Costin told us to contact him for more development programme and to identify talents from here and develop them. He was happy to see some good players around and he is hoping to nurture those raw talents,” Nakiole said

3 years development plan

He also added that following the clinic on Tuesday it was an eye-opener for the students especially to play rugby league.

“Playing rugby sevens is the popular sport here but after Costin’s visit the students are interested in rugby league therefore the school is planning to have a three-year development plan for the sport. We hope to participate at the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition,” Nakiole added.

Meanwhile the island of Nacula, Yasawa has produced prominent rugby league players like NRL legend Petero Civoniceva.

Other prominent players produced from the Yasawas are former national 7s captain Kalione Nasoko, sledgehammer Eroni Sau, Aminiasi Tuimaba, former Wallabies winger Taqele Naiyaravoro, Fijian Latui captain Mosese Voka and former Crusaders winger Setareki Tamanivalu.
