Two Republic of Fiji Military Forces officer cadets have been selected to study at the prestigious United States Military Academy West Point.

Max Delai and Sera Lewaravu will be RFMF pioneers to attend the military academy.

Initially, only one spot was allocated for the RFMF.

However, it is understood that the West Point board were impressed by the standard set by the shortlisted applicants that another candidate was selected.

A joint announcement is expected to be made by the RFMF and the US Embassy soon.

Mr Delai and Ms Lewaravu were selected after a vigorous selection process by the RFMF and their US counterparts.

The shortlisted candidates had to complete a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) conducted at the US Embassy in Tamavua.

The final selection was made by the West Point Academy.

As for the successful RFMF Naval Division candidate to attend the Naval Academy at Annapolis, a formal announcement will be made soon.

Earlier this year, RFMF Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto confirmed the training opportunities at the two distinguished institutions.

The offer was made last September when the US Under Secretary of the Navy, Thomas Modly, visited here.

Meanwhile, RFMF officer cadets Nathan Lilo and Orisi Amaraki have been selected to undertake studies at the Royal Military College in Duntroon, Canberra, Australia.

RMC is the Australian Army’s officer training establishment.

It is widely known to prepare cadets by promoting leadership, integrity, loyalty and service.

Also breaking new ground in the male-dominated institution is Fane Rokowailoa.

She will be the first Fijian female officer cadet to attend the Australian Defence Force Academy. It is Australia’s military institution which combines military education and training with academic study for an undergraduate degree.

The Academy is supported under contract with the University of New South Wales.
