Providing every Fijian child an opportunity to get access to education was a major goal for the Bainimarama-Government and the FijiFirst-Government.

In the 2018-2019 National Budget Government had set aside a record $1 billion for the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts.

A big part of this was to continue the rehabilitation left behind by Tropical Cyclone Winston. Apart from the rebuild, the three major initiatives where Government continues to invest in the education of young Fijians is:

The Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar, said: “The introduction of these initiatives has removed barriers for students to enjoy their right to education.

“It has relieved the financial commitment from families and, through the milk and WeetBix initiative, complemented a healthy start to school for Year 1 students. At the time, the ministry saw a significant increase in the number of students registered for schools emphasising the removal of barriers to education. With the advent of formal ECCE centres, the Government has gone a step further to develop the foundation for students’ future education,” she said.
