2019 Punjas Pacific Nations Cup: Fiji Men Stay On Track

The Fijian men’s side are on track with their campaign at the 2019 Punjas Pacific Nations Cup at the Tennis Fiji Regional Centre in Nadovu Park, Lautoka yesterday.

The side laced with William O’Connell and Sebastian Tikaram beat Team Nauru in a convincing fashion.

Tikaram beat Delvin Thomas 6-1, 6- while O’Connell proved too strong for Robert Hubert 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, O’Connell/Tikaram beat Hubert/Thomas 6-0, 6-4.

“So far so good and we have not dropped a match so far,” said Fiji’s number one seed William O’Connell said.

“Have pretty convincing wins and looking forward for our final pool match tomorrow against Norfolk.

“It will be a tough match but we will give in our best shot.”

O’Connell said he is feeling the brunt of his injury but is managing it.

“We are battling through as injury is part and parcel of playing any sports but all is in good hands.”

The Florida, US- based player thanked Punjas for sponsoring the event alongside the Fiji National Sports Commission and International Tennis Federation.

The side play Norfolk Island today in their final pool match.

On Tuesday, the Fijian men’s team beat Solomon Islands while the Fijian Development side lost to Northern Marianas.

The Fijian Development side also lost to Samoa where Avikash Kumar went down to Kristen Pavit by 6-0, 6-0 while Storm Cornish beat Marvin So’Onalole 6-1, 6-0. In the doubles, Cornish/ Shantanu Shail lost to Marvin So’Onalate/ Philip Warren 6-1, 6-2.

In the women’s matches Fiji beat America Samoa. Ruby Coffin beat Kajol Chand 4-6, 1-6 while Saoirse Breen beat Vienna Kumar 6-0, 6-0 and Breen/Coffin beat Kumar/Charity Sagiao 3-6, 2-6.

The competition ends on Sunday.
