Man, 54, Accused Of Raping Granddaughter, 9, In Remand

A 54-year-old Tailevu man facing a rape charge has been remanded in custody by the High Court in Suva.

The accused appeared before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar on Monday. The accused is charged with one count each of rape and of sexual assault.

The alleged incidents occurred on January 17, 2019, at Tailevu. The complainant in the matter is the accused’s nine-year-old granddaughter.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Inia Rakaria had filed and served the information and disclosures.

Defence lawyer from the Legal Aid Commission Anil Chand had request time from court to advise the accused of plea.

The matter was adjourned to June 11 for plea.
