Time To Weed Out Those Who Create Fake News

Editorial:

For the third time a student claimed abduction by Chinese. Yet another one has cried wolf. What is the excuse this time?

The Director of Public Prosecutions should come down hard on these students. We cannot claim that they are misguided youngsters, they are not.

They knowingly lied to public officials, to Police officers and those who are gullible fell for it, for the third time.

Giving false information is a crime. We need to nip this lying business in the bud before the mob mentality sets in and this spills off into violence.

All those three students should be charged with giving false information, they should be held accountable for their actions.

Fiji does not have a market for organ black marketing. It is non-existent.

There are no people out there kidnapping kids and harvesting their organs, this is not a line out of a Hollywood movie.

But the continuing drama surrounding this and having overnight experts giving their views on social media is indeed very sad.

If anyone needed to harvest an organ, they would not try to kidnap children in broad daylight in busy areas.

But, it is not happening in Fiji and for our children to think it is all right to lie about something like this says a lot about the environment they are being raised in.

Why did they need to lie? Truancy and need for attention.

What can be done to stop a fourth child from repeating this lie?

Holding the first three accountable. They need to face the law. They should be made to realise what they did was wrong.

And their parents need to support this. In two cases now, parents have come out in support of their children.

Their insistence that their child did not lie despite having overwhelming evidence to show that they did, does no one any good, least of all their own children.

Adults who are quick to jump to conclusions on social media also should be taken to task.

In fact, sharing of fake news which is happening far too often now should be criminalised and people should also be held accountable.

This is not muzzling freedom of expression, but it is weeding out those who spread fake news out of spite.

DPP Christopher Pryde should agree to lay charges against these three youngsters.
