CITY’S DRUNK MENACE

Saturday and Sunday mornings are not a pretty sight in Suva City.

Along with litter from the previous night, the city streets are lined with drunkards trying to hail cabs and with those who knocked out on the roadside or in front of shops.

There are those who sit in some areas of the city, outside supermarkets or bottle shops and hassle members of the public for a few coins in the hope of buying more booze to continue the party.

There are some caught in the city’s darker corners hoping for a quick romp with people of the opposite or same sex before heading home as daylight approaches.

Then there are some who are so drunk that they forget where they are. Yesterday morning one such person was seen urinating in a Suva City Council garbage bin in broad daylight, opposite the Suva Bus Stand.

He then proceeded to take a nap in front of a nearby store. The man probably thought he was at home.

Surprisingly, no Police presence was seen in the city at this time.

And hopefully municipal workers cleaning garbage bins wear gloves designed to deal with bio-hazards.

PUBLIC GENEROSITY

The generosity of members of the public who joined hands to give a Nadi family a home of their own is overwhelming.

Just a little more than two weeks after the Fiji Sun highlighted the plight of Atelaite Koto and her two sons, Graham Woods and Jimilai Kani, in its May 16 edition, the family received the keys to their newly-built home on Saturday, thanks to a group of good Samaritans who banded together to help the family.

There is even help from an overseas donor to help the two boys to return to school.

Thank you to all the good Samaritans for making this all possible.
